Kody’s Story: A Mentor’s Unwavering Support

In 2013, Kody met Kevin through Western Youth Network’s mentoring program. What began as a simple match has grown into an 11-year bond that has shaped Kody’s life in countless ways.

Kevin has been there through every milestone, every challenge, and every dream. Whether it was teaching Kody how to swim, taking him on countless hikes through the Blue Ridge Mountains, or encouraging him to run his first 5K, Kevin has always been a steady presence, showing up with patience, kindness, and belief in Kody’s potential. From the early days of learning new skills to exploring career interests—first as a comedian, then a lawyer, now a radio DJ—Kevin has supported every step of Kody’s self-discovery.

Their adventures together have stretched far beyond Boone. Kevin took Kody on his first-ever trip to the beach, where they fished (unsuccessfully but enthusiastically), played mini-golf, raced go-karts, and swam in the ocean until the waves had worn them out. Most recently, Kevin drove Kody across North Carolina to visit colleges, making sure Kody knew that his dreams were within reach.

But perhaps the most meaningful thing Kevin has given Kody is consistency. Through life’s toughest moments, Kevin has been there—offering encouragement, celebrating successes, and lifting Kody up when things felt like they were falling apart. Kevin and his family have embraced Kody as one of their own, including him in holidays and even making him feel like a big brother when Kevin and his wife welcomed their first child.

As Kody prepares for his next chapter, Kevin remains in his corner, reminding him that the sky is the limit—as long as he keeps showing up and giving his best. Their story is a testament to the power of mentorship, proving that sometimes, just having one person believe in you can make all the difference.

Alohna’s Story: A Future Filled with Hope

By third grade, Alohna had already endured deep loss and financial hardship. She struggled with confidence and felt uncertain about what her future could hold. But then, she found WYN.

Through WYN’s mentorship program, Alohna connected with caring adults who encouraged her, helped with schoolwork, and gave her the confidence to dream bigger. She found friends, laughter, and a sense of belonging.

At times, the road wasn’t easy. She faced challenges and setbacks, but she kept going. With the support of her mentors and peers, she learned resilience, self-worth, and the power of community. Slowly, she started to believe in herself the way others at WYN believed in her.

Today, Alohna is thriving. She recently graduated from Appalachian State University and achieved her dream of becoming a teacher.

“It feels amazing to have graduated and gotten my dream teaching job. All of the hard work was worth it, and I feel incredibly blessed. I couldn’t have done it without Angela McMann (in WYN’s Mentoring Program) and WYN supporting me throughout my educational journey, from elementary to college. Angela and WYN have truly gone above and beyond to help make this possible.” – Alohna
