10 Years of Festive Fun and Funds

by Jennifer Warren

We are so excited to be celebrating the 10th year of Western Youth Network's  Festival of Trees Fundraiser!

We hope you will plan to join us for some fun at our events this week (listed below) and that you will make plans to get some of your holiday shopping done by purchasing one of the amazing trees that's on our auction. WYN receives 100% of the proceeds from your purchase!

This year, we are keeping the impact of Hurricane Helene in mind. Many of the gift cards on our trees came from local businesses and were purchased by the tree designers in an effort to support local companies. Some tree designers also incorporated hurricane recovery into their designs. One tree is in honor of our heroes (designed by VPC Builders) while another tree, designed by Blue Ridge Tourist Court, encourages us to “Look for the Helpers.” Yet another tree’s theme symbolizes Peace on Earth (designed by the Misfit Toys friend group).

Please be sure to check out all of these trees on the auction site and read on for more details about this week's events as well.

  • Wednesday Dec 4 : Free viewing of the movie Elf at the Appalachian Theater 7-9pm
  • Thursday Dec 5: Free hot chocolate social, Watauga County Parks and Recreation Center 4-6pm — wreaths make great gifts!
  • Thursday Dec 5: Help WYN reach $20k-in-One-Day!

Cheers to 10 Years

It has been amazing to have many community partners who have been a part of the Festival of Trees event from the beginning. Be on the lookout for some social media shout outs to these wonderful groups soon!

We also want to congratulate Erica Lackey and Jenny Koehn for being on the Festival of Trees planning committee for the last decade. The amount of hours they have put into this event over the last 10 years is stunning. Almost everyone else on the planning committee has been involved for 7-9 years as well! These members include: Mandy Robertson, Margaret McCoy, Caroline Davis, Stacey Gibson, Jan Todd, Kate Younger and Kate Stucke (and a special thank you to committee "newcomer" Cynthia Miller who has been on the committee for 3 years).

100+ items including trees, wreaths, and gifts under the tree are available via online auction now until this Thursday, December 5th.

Themed trees offer gift packages including items such as: Gamekeeper’s Shred-mas skateboarding tree, a horse-themed package from Bennett Fine Homes, an Ashe County Spice & Tea Exchange “tree time,” a Cookie Monster themed tree (featuring gift cards for local sweet treats) offered by the Courtyard Marriott, and numerous staycations, local attraction tickets, fine art, and so much more.

One tree features a new mattress (you select the size) while Blowing Rock Rotary showcases the talents of Blue Ridge artists.

Aquarium passes from around the state, Chetola massages, local alpaca gifts, Appalachian FC season passes, coffee and local food (and the popular Harris Teeter holiday meals) can all be found by searching our auction.

And did we mention High Country Community Health’s "Hard Candy Christmas" tree, which features two tickets to Dollywood, an autographed photo of Dolly and other Boone & Gatlinburg goodies, perfect for Christmas morning?

Please don't miss our handmade "Gifts Under the Tree" category which includes pet stockings, a quilted tree skirt and a queen sized quilt, all courtesy of Carolina Sew Sisters. These make great gifts!

See a package you want but don't need a tree this year? You can keep the associated gifts and donate the tree to the Watauga Recreation Center for all to enjoy this holiday season!
