Sonny Sweet Scholarship Fund

after school

Western Youth Network (WYN) is honored to celebrate our partnership with Sonny and Bricca Sweet to establish the Sonny Sweet Scholarship Fund!

The purpose of Sonny’s Scholarship Fund is to ensure all High Country Youth are able to access WYN’s valuable services that provide the skills, safety, and support these youth need to thrive and reach their full potential.  WYN started Sonny’s scholarship fund with a kick-off event in August, 2015.  The Sonny Sweet Scholarship Fund has already provided three area youth with full scholarships for WYN’s 2016 summer program!  We are now able to fully fund summer program participation for FOUR area youth for WYN’s Summer 2017 program!

Sonny is a highly decorated retired Army colonel, who served his country for nearly 31 years. More recently, he provided direction for the local Red Cross chapter, as he helped countless people through major disasters. Sonny also provided area service through the Military Officers Association of America, Kiwanis of Boone, Blue Ridge Chapter of the American Red Cross, Blood, Sweat and Gears Inc., the town of Boone and the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce. Sonny was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2013, and he wanted to establish a lasting legacy that would help kids.  He chose to partner with Western Youth Network (WYN) to establish a scholarship fund in his name that would increase the number of needy area adolescents who could participate in WYN’s programs. His continued legacy is found in this scholarship fund!

An increasing number of High Country youth need these motivational real-world learning experiences and academic help to succeed in school and life.  Sonny hopes to grow this scholarship fund to help WYN assist even more High Country youth who most need help.  He and Bricca have formed a Scholarship Planning Committee with George Brudzinski, Kristin Copeland, Mary Hall, and Brenda Lowman to plan events that will raise awareness of and funds for WYN’s Sonny Sweet Scholarship.  Send any questions to

SAVE THE DATE!  Our next big fundraising event for Sonny’s Scholarship Fund, a Sweet High Country Salute, will be Thursday, August 24, 2017, 6 to 9 pm at the Harvest House in Boone.  Food and drink from local restaurants, an area youth group, plus a nationally known entertainer, will make a festive celebration for all.  More details will be available on June 1!
