2005 Dance Marathon a Big Success!
The 3rd annual ASU-sponsored Dance Marathon sponsored by Appalachian State University was a tremendous success! More than 100 dancers stayed on their feet from 9am on Saturday, October 15 until 9am Sunday, October 16th! Even more impressive, they raised over $20,000 to benefit WYN and Parent to Parent Family Support Network of the High Country. There were more surprises and entertaining moments this year than ever! ASU Softball Team Hosts Clinic for WYN
On Thursday, October 20, the Appalachian State University softball team coached the WYN after school group on an early release day by offering a softball clinic. More than 25 WYN participants got the chance to build their skills in throwing, catching, and batting. They also got to play a game with the ASU players! WYN Dares To Make a Difference--Success of the Month
On Monday, October 31, the Western After School program took a group of three 6th graders trick-or-treating. This may not seem like a big deal to most, but for these three kids, it was a momentous occasion. One of the three had never been trick-or-treating before, and would not have been able to go this year were it not for WYN. The afternoon began when the ASU tutors created costumes for the kids and dressed them up. Then, the tutors, kids, and WYN staff rode in the WYN van to houses in the Sugar Grove community. The kids were more excited than the WYN staff had ever seen them! The relationship-building that took place between the ASU tutors and WYN kids was monumental. Further, the relationships that were created between the kids (all were from different schools) created a lasting network. One of the three kids was new to the community and had the opportunity, through trick-or-treating, to make new friends. It also gave three kids the opportunity to participate in something they ordinarily would not have been able to. Who knew so much could happen trick-or-treating?
WYN's Annual Halloween Carnival/Red Ribbon Celebration
WYN's Annual Halloween Festival/Red Ribbon Celebration provided a fun and spooky evening for all of it's guests. The event, held on Friday October 28, entertained guests with games, prizes, food, and a haunted house. WYN would like to thank all volunteers and guests for participating in the games and fun! WYN would also like to extend a special thank you to the coordinator of the event, NC ACTS! volunteer, Dusty Teng.
