January recognized as  National Mentoring Month

The Western Youth Network is celebrating 25 years of mentoring and kicking off a new year during the month of January, National Mentoring Month.

On January 6th, 2010, The White House released President Obama's proclamation stating, "NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 2010 as National Mentoring Month. I call upon public officials, business and community leaders, educators, and Americans across the country to observe this month with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs."

To see the full Presidential Proclamation, click here.

The U.S.Senate has also officially recognized January as National Mentoring Month with a resolution introduced by Senators John McCain and John Kerry.

The resolution states that the Senate "recognizes with gratitude the contributions of the millions of caring adults and students who are already volunteering as mentors and encourages more adults and students to volunteer as mentors; and encourages the people of the United States to observe National Mentoring Month with appropriate ceremonies and activities that promote awareness of, and volunteer involvement with, youth mentoring."

You can view a full copy of the resolution by clicking here.

WYN will also receive a proclamation from the Mayor of Boone, Loretta Clawson, Wednesday January 13th, in Honor of National Mentoring Month.

WYN is excited about a new year and new possibilities for the mentoring program.

For more information about our mentoring program, or to become a mentor, please contact Program Director, Angela McMann at (828)264-5174 or visit, www.westernyouthnetwork.org

Pirates of Penzance

As an effort to provide enriching activities for mentors and their mentees, WYN's mentoring program provides monthly event opportunities for participants.

January's mentoring event will be a showcase of The Pirates of Penzance, a classic musical comedy that is a part of ASU's Performing Arts Series.

The Pirates of Penzance will be performed by New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players on the stage of Farthing Auditorium. The event will take place at 8pm on Friday, January 22.

WYN's Mentoring Program embraces community arts and culture and  believes The Pirates of Penzance is a exceptional way to kick off a new year.
