Sales Tax Referedum Aug. 31st- Your vote counts
Watauga County is presenting a Sales Tax Referendum to support the proposed Teen Recreation Center. The $12 million project will call for a quarter-cent sales tax increase.

Commissioners noted that the quarter-cent amounted to 25 cents per $100 in purchases, with groceries exempt from the sales tax.

Watauga County residents will have the opportunity to vote on the referendum on August 31st. Get educated on the issue and prepare to vote!

WYN Goes to Carolina Beach
WYN staffers, Angie Grimes, Grace Fortune, and Nicole Hiegl took 11 Project Venture and after school students to Carolina Beach during the Watauga County Schools spring break. The group camped at Carolina Beach state park each night, cooked "gourmet" meals, created songs and games around the camp fire, and occasionally chased raccoons out of camp.

The days were spent hiking and playing on the beach, attempting to get as wet as possible while only "wading" along the water's edge, surf fishing with park rangers, learning kayak skills, and exploring Fort Fisher.

For some students, it was their first time seeing the ocean. Everyone was very happy to have been a part of the trip and many students expressed their desire to attend the trip next year (even the soon-to-be 9th graders who would have to come back as volunteers!).

Check out the pictures on the WYN website by clicking here, and be on the lookout for a special spring break story-telling session (complete with pictures) hosted by the kids who went on the trip (tentative date and location: May 7th, Watauga County Public Library.)
